Americans who are several generations removed from their ancestral cultures have lost their cultural heritage and therefore either adopt cultural traits from others or create a new culture. This may be why the strange occurrences were attributed to extraterrestrials instead of fae and other local folklore, like they are in other countries around the world.
In Europe and other parts of the world, where folklore traditions such as fae, djinn, or ancestral spirits remain deeply ingrained in cultural memory, strange occurrences are often explained within these frameworks. A rustle in the forest, a missing item, or a strange light in the sky might be attributed to local beings because those stories are alive in the cultural imagination.
In the U.S., though, many people are several generations removed from their ancestral homelands. Immigrant groups often lost or suppressed their folk traditions to assimilate, and what resulted was a kind of cultural “reset.” Without deep-rooted mythologies to lean on, Americans often interpret the unknown through whatever new stories are available. In the 20th century, the concept of extraterrestrials emerged as an explanation that made sense in an era shaped by science, space exploration, and advanced technology. Instead of fairies, brownies, or household spirits, people saw UFOs, aliens, and abductions.
In that way, the UFO narrative in America can be understood as a modern mythos born out of cultural loss and re-invention. It’s not that the experiences themselves were entirely new — it’s that the interpretive framework shifted. Where Celtic culture might say “fae,” Islamic tradition might say “djinn,” and Slavic tradition might say “domovoi,” Americans — culturally untethered — say “alien.”
This can be viewed as an invention of a mythos to fill the gap or it could be seen that Americans did not have the cloudy lens of cultural myths therefore they see the phenomena for what it truly is. Regardless of the origin or filter, people continue to experience strange occurrences worldwide, with many having no explanation. Whether they be from fae, djinn, or aliens, there is a mystery that deserves attention and study.
